Wow it’s been a long time since I’ve been able to write something positive… I hit a rough patch for a long, long time and I finally feel like I’m moving in a good direction again!

A little catch up- I’ve moved to Colorado, finally!!! I’ve been working on this goal for a long time and it came true! I launched the speaking and coaching aspect of Run Epic. I’m working with not only people who want to work on their fitness and health goals, but businesses small and large. I have several engagements already booked for the year and I will be traveling all over the U.S. this year to meet with clients and to speak at different events.

A lot of people have asked me about the coaching aspect- Together we focusing on your goals, actions and working thru adversities so you and your team can grow. If you’re interested in chatting about it, call or text me: 303.661.7780 or email me: I work with people all over the U.S. and the world. Reach out and we can go over what is important to you and we can go over any specifics you’d like to know about the process and investment.

Although I spend 60+ hours a week working, I also got back into Leadville 100 this year!!! After a devastating race last year, I’m looking forward to taking advantage of my second opportunity to conquer Leadville! I’ve learned to never was a second chance and I’m more excited than ever to get rocking toward LT100 again!

Now that catch up is over, As I was boarding the plane yesterday (2 minutes before I turned my phone off J ) I got a text from a friend asking me a great question. Luckily I was able to spend some time on the flight answering it and I thought I would share the question as well as my answer.

Question: Do you credit your accomplishments to motivation or discipline?

What is discipline? To me, discipline is action (or inaction) with an intent to work toward a goal even when results are not seen or enforced.

What is motivation? To me, motivation is the feeling that moves one toward their goals by continuing to follow their plan even when faced with obstacles and/or adversities.

I would have to credit my success to my learned ability to stay disciplined even when my motivation waivered and my ability to stay motivated to work back to my daily disciplines even when faced with obstacles and adversities.

As with anything, there is no either/or. There is balance. It is our ability to build a strong and solid foundation to build upon. When we focus too much on one aspect of our goals and action we lose our balance and stumble because our foundation is weak. We lack trust in it because we are looking for unstable instant gratification rather than building a strong foundation we can stand on for a long period of time.

When we look at any aspect of life, we look for results. We will pay the highest price for the results, but we wouldn’t even take the small free step to get our foundation started…

This is why fitness and health is a process, not a product…  You can buy all the products for all the money and by taking the product you may see some results almost right away. But when you stop buying and using the product, the results go away. This makes you dependent on someone else for your results. You spend your money for a product you think will make you happy. But in the end, the product company makes a fortune off your dependency. It creates an illusion of cause and effect.

When we rely on a product, we miss the importance of developing ourselves from within. When we see instant results, we correlate our success with the product rather than the process. The companies know how easily we get addicted to instant gratification and they are able to create the short term feelings that make us continue to pay for the feeling we get… But what happens when you stop buying and taking the product?? We don’t have a foundation built so we lose all the results the product “gave us”… This causes us to want to buy more or it encourages us to quit….

When you work to develop a process designed specifically to get you to your goal, you may or may not get the instant tangible results. But, no matter what you “see” you are beginning to take the steps to build the foundation. When you build a foundation it takes massive destruction to tear it down. Think of how hard it is to change for the better. It’s hard right?? It’s because our bad habits are built on the same solid foundation.

To change, we have to disassemble the foundation brick by brick so we can start the process of rebuilding, the same way, brick by brick. We have to have an idea of what we want to new foundation to look like. This is why we need to have a solid set of goals we are deeply connected to. Without a “why” it’s hard to move toward the “how”.

Once we have the vision of where we want to go, we start to develop our action plan for success. Think of how long an architect spends designing a sky scraper. It takes a team of people right? Why would you not want to have a coach working alongside you to help you design the goals and action plan that would help lead you to success?? Someone once told me a coach is someone who helps you see your what you can’t see, even when you don’t want to see it…

Once you have your goals and plan, it’s time to start disassembling the bricks of the old foundation and taking the action to build the new foundation. Day by day, brick by brick, you are putting in the time and effort. Some days it seems like you don’t make any progress. Some days you feel like you didn’t take any action. Some days it feels like you are just wasting time. Some days you ask yourself, “isn’t there a faster and better way to do this?”.

Here’s why having a coach and mentor is so important. What are the odds you stumble and fall?? Big. What are the chances you miss a day? High. Who are you going to turn to when you run into adversity and have trouble finding a solution? Are you going to ask someone who has never walked in your shoes or are you going to have someone you can talk to that understands how you feel, who has been in your shoes, and who knows how to work through the pitfalls and keep taking action? Do you want someone who is going to encourage you to quit? Or do you want someone who is going to not only encourage you to keep moving forward, but to help guide you along the way so you can continue to build the solid foundation toward your goals? For a long time I didn’t work with a coach because I thought I could do it all myself…. But I learned after many, many failures and after falling flat on my face for years, that I needed someone I could call and ask questions. I needed someone who could encourage me when I couldn’t encourage myself. I needed a positive team who was invested in MY success. I knew to go to the next level, I had to surround myself with people who have been through the blood, sweat, and tears and have accomplished what I want to accomplish. And when I put together my own team, it changed my life in ways I can’t even explain.

As you are building your foundation you will notice you stand a little higher, walk with a little more authority and you can feel how solid the world underneath you is. Once you build the solid foundation toward the life you want to live, you can (and will) continue building under your own control. By finding the power from within you are no longer relying on anyone or any product for your success. This is when you begin to create your own personal freedom to create the holistic life you want to live. This is when you get to escape the reliance on others and begin to rely on how great you are.

So…., do I contribute my success to motivation or discipline??

Yes. The answer is yes!!! I was able to tear down the walls of my past brick by brick and rebuild them into the foundation of my new life, slowly, brick by brick until I rebuilt the foundation I used to springboard myself into my redesigned future.

The best thing is I didn’t have to go and “buy” any new bricks because it was all already inside me!! All I needed was the knowledge and the road map to guide me through the process of finding out what I wanted and who I would have to become to get what I wanted in life.

Don’t get me wrong, this hasn’t been easy. It hasn’t been cheap. I have had to give up more than I ever dreamed. I’ve had to work harder than I ever thought. I’ve had to destroy myself in order to rebuild who I am today. I have lost friends, family, business associates, a spouse, time with my kids, and a life I had known for so long…. But, the life I have now and the life I can see myself moving toward in the future is much bigger than I ever dreamed was possible. And as hard as other people have fought against me and the turmoil I have had to overcome to get where I am today, I know no matter what happens in the future, no one can ever take away my accomplishments and they cannot tear me down from the outside because I have built my foundation from within. And knowing I built it from within has given me one of the greatest feelings of self-worth I’ve ever had and no one can ever take this feeling away from me. More importantly, having gone through my own personal transformation, I know that if I can do it, ANYONE can do it! The best part is it didn’t come from a product. I didn’t have to rely on someone else to get me here. It isn’t material in any way.

The best part about the whole process is it came from the spirit that lives within me (and that lives within you too!!!!). The spirit within me is burning hotter and brighter than ever before! It’s great to know the fuel keeps getting thrown into the fire in abundance! So I ask you if you are ready to make a change in your life, please, don’t wait another day. Let’s get to work together, RIGHT NOW, so together, we can begin working and building the life you want to live. I want to help spread the wildfire of success and positivity to you and I’m so excited and ready to get you going!!!
